Day 41: Mary Katherine Gallagher. I didn’t watch a ton of Saturday Night Live during the late 90’s – early 2000’s, so I didn’t catch a lot of MKG, but Molly Shannon truly threw herself into this character. This one is simple colors under pencils.
Day 40: Matt Foley. Chris Farley’s motivational speaker character who lives in a van down by the river was always funny, but nothing will ever top that first appearance, where David Spade and Christina Applegate can’t keep it together. I forgot how many great lines there were in just this one sketch. Again this piece is very loose, with layered opaque markers. I added the motion lines to capture the energy that Farley brought to this character.
Day 39: Dieter. Mike Myers’ black clad host of the German chat show, Sprockets was another silly favorite of mine. Though the recurring sketch was funny, the short film, Dieter’s Dream might go down as one of my all-time favorite sketches. If I come back to SNL, I may have to draw Phil Hartman’s character, Susan, from that sketch.
